Residents of New Bortianor in Accra are excited about the installation of mobile transformers by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to solve their unstable power supply challenges for nearly a year.

The area is located around the West Hills Mall enclave and has experienced unreliable power supply in the past eight months, resulting in power outages and poor voltage trips.

This has caused damage to homes and industries in the huge Bortianor community and surrounding areas.

Dr. Wiredu Antwi, chairman of the West Hills Landlord and Residents Association, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the mobile transformers were installed at the right time because they had endured continuous power outages for a long time.

According to him, the area experienced at least four power outages in a week, often for more than 24 hours.

He said that the residents' association contacted the Accra Eastern Regional Manager and expressed their dissatisfaction, and as a result a meeting was held at the company's request to resolve the problem.

Dr. Antwi said that they have received assurance from the engineer that they have identified the cause of the intermittent power outage and found a remedy.

"In fact, they have been able to deliver on their promises by providing mobile transformers until they find a permanent solution. We are very excited about this," he said, praising the company's rapid response to their plight.

Mr. Emmanuel Ankrah, a regional engineer, an official from the eastern region of Accra, and an ECG regional engineer, introduced the project to GNA. He said that the area's load and infrastructure have increased significantly, so the company's power distribution cannot meet their growing energy needs.

"So, what we did was to build a new substation-a primary substation with a mobile transformer that could temporarily increase the supply of this enclave," he said.

The mobile transformer being installed is about 20 megavolt-amperes (MVA). After it is put into use within a week, it will strengthen the power supply in the area and solve the challenges faced by residents.

The cost of the transformer exceeds 350 million GHS and is funded by the Ghana Power Company.

He said that when all the transformers are installed, problems such as frequent power outages, voltage differences, and unreliable power supply will become a thing of the past, giving residents some breathing opportunities.

The regional engineer said that the mobile transformer will be stationed in the area because the ECG is looking for a permanent substation site and said "it will always exist until a new permanent station is finally built."

He said that the company has identified areas with similar challenges and plans to build primary substations, adding that the new Bortiano area is one of the areas to solve power supply challenges.

He mentioned that Ablekuma and Korle-Bu are regions that benefit from similar projects to increase the power supply to their customers.
