A popular Houma donut shop expects to reopen in the next few days after closing Saturday because an electrical surge damaged most of its equipment.

Mr. Ronnie's Famous Hot Donuts, 1171 W. Tunnel Blvd., lost power about noon Saturday, co-owner and managing partner Bud Picou said. An electrician checked everything out and determined the problem was stemming from a nearby transformer.

About 3 p.m., Picou said, Entergy employees finished replacing the transformer and left. Shortly afterward, a surge went through the store.

"Fire came out of some of the sockets. I mean, I'm surprised the whole building didn't go up," Picou said. "My equipment had flames flying out of some of them – literally fried and burned up half of my stuff in here."

About half of his equipment is ruined, Picou said. He estimates that between the equipment and lost sales, it has cost him about $150,000. He's been spending the week replacing equipment.

"So we're hoping within three, four more days to be open again by the grace of God, but it was bad, it was bad and costly enough," Picou said. "I just got back on my feet from the damned hurricane., and this is like about the worst possible time something like this to happen."

Picou said he met with the claims adjuster Wednesday and that so far, Entergy is making it right.

"So they're in good faith, they're very proactive and they're taking care of it," he said.

Paula Rome, Entergy customer service manager for the bayou region, said the incident is under investigation.

"Entergy is doing everything we can do to expedite the claim request for them," Rome said. "So they can get back up and running."
