Ensuring and maintaining productivity has long been a central concern for chemists, whether working in a busy university lab or a large industrial laboratory.

GlaxoSmithKline was at the forefront of addressing this issue when the company first considered approaches to increasing productivity by performing multiple reactions in parallel.

Conventional methodology sees each separate reaction performed in a round bottom flask with an oil bath, glass water condenser and adequate supplies of water and power.

This traditional, individual approach is more than sufficient for ‘one off’ reactions, but the ever-expanding need for enhanced productivity has necessitated an alternate approach, delivering improved efficiency with no adverse impact on performance.

To this end, Radleys has partnered with GlaxoSmithKline to conceptualize, develop and launch the Carousel.

The Carousel 12 Reaction Station has been designed with efficiency and productivity at its core, putting these back in the chemist’s hands. The Carousel is a personal synthesis station that allows users to perform up to twelve reactions in the timescale and footprint as a single reaction.

Productivity and ease of use are assured since there is no requirement for a separate water condenser and oil bath per reaction – in order to work, the Carousel requires a single standard stirring hotplate with a common water supply and power source.

Its efficient chemistry and novel design allow the Carousel to heat or cool simultaneously, stir and reflux up to twelve samples under an inert atmosphere.

The loss of solvent via evaporation is a constant issue in all lab environments.

To minimize the risk of this and other leaks, a special ‘cooling zone’ and internal shut off valves are installed. This ensures a more accurate result while reducing the likelihood of leaks.

Maintaining consistency between separate reactions in terms of heat and stirring is a necessary yet arduous task that ultimately impacts productivity.

The Carousel is able to simultaneously heat up to twelve user-controllable reactions with an accuracy of +/- 1 °C.

A patented design allows the Carousel to ensure efficient and accurate stirring in all twelve tubes.

The Carousel’s distinct circular design guarantees precise tube positioning around the stirring hotplate’s centrally-located magnet, ensuring that every tube is stirred equally and simultaneously.

The Carousel’s precision-engineered borosilicate glass tubes have been designed to maximize heat transfer from the instrument’s heated aluminum base and cooled reflux head.

This configuration allows all tubes to be heated and cooled at an identical rate.

Viewing slots installed in the Carousel’s base ensures that users can easily view tubes and their contents throughout synthesis.

The Carousel’s design makes it easier than ever to perform multiple reactions in parallel. The compact reaction station can be set up quickly and easily, and it is straightforward use and clean, regardless of the chemist’s level of experience.

Since its initial concept and design, the Carousel 12 Reaction Station has been the industry standard for maximizing productivity in chemistry labs.

Since launch, Radleys have extended the Carousel range to include a Cooled Carousel and the highly popular Carousel 6 - a version of the instrument designed for round bottom flasks.
