The Wisconsin Elections Commission has selected a Republican attorney to serve as its new  leader. The commission voted 5-1 on Friday to make Don Millis the new commission chairman. He replaces Democrat Ann Jacobs. The position is crucial; the chair approves the vote canvass following elections and certifies results. The chair also sets the agenda for the commission and can influence how questions are framed, a key power on a panel that's evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats. State law required that the next chair be one of two Republicans in the form of Millis or Bob Spindell. Spindell has taken many positions that have angered Democrats, including casting an Electoral College vote for Donald Trump in 2020.

Angered by the unrelenting toll from gun violence, tens of thousands of people are expected at rallies this weekend in the nation’s capital and around the United States demanding that Congress pass meaningful changes to gun laws. The second March For Our Lives rally will take place Saturday in front of the Washington Monument. It's a successor to the 2018 march organized by student protestors after the mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida. Now with recent shootings from Uvalde, Texas, to Buffalo, New York, bringing gun control back into the national conversation, organizers of this weekend’s events say the time is right to renew their push for a national overhaul.

Kylian Mbappe came off the bench to rescue a point for France in a 1-1 draw at Austria in the Nations League on Friday. But the defending champion is in last place with just two points from three group games. Mbappe curled a fine left-footed shot into the top corner in the 83rd minute for his 27th international goal. World Cup winner France is under pressure ahead of Monday night’s must-win home game with Croatia, which won 1-0 at Denmark thanks to Mario Pasalic’s goal midway through the second half. The Danes top Group 1 with six points while Austria and Croatia have four.

Records show Republican former U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci spent nearly $12 million in his failed primary bid against Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine. Only about $290,000 of that was from outside donors. Post-primary campaign finance reports filed Friday show the governor spent $6.8 million during the primary season. He heads into the fall with nearly $7 million on hand. That's 10 times the amount of Democratic rival Nan Whaley. She is the former mayor of Dayton. Renacci reported loaning his campaign $15 million. DeWine bested Renacci and two other rivals critical of his COVID-19 policies. Whaley reported raising over $1 million as of June 3.

Authorities say the person killed when a steel crossbar collapsed at a freeway construction project was a Las Vegas police officer. A police procession on U.S. 95 followed the removal of the officer’s body more than six hours after the 7 a.m. Friday incident at U.S. 95 and the 215 Beltway in northwest Las Vegas. The officer’s name wasn't immediately made public, and it wasn't immediately clear if he was on-duty at the time. A state transportation spokesman says an oversized piece of construction equipment towed on a trailer dislodged the beam erected as a height warning for trucks approaching an interchange overpass work zone.

Robert Redford and George R.R. Martin are the big names behind “Dark Winds,” but they’re not the most important. That distinction belongs to the Native American creators and actors who made the AMC mystery series. The director of “Dark Winds” says the storytelling is “an inside job,” with the result a Native American “film noir.” Based on the Tony Hillerman novels featuring Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police, “Dark Winds” puts the newly teamed lawmen on a double-murder case. The series starring Zahn McClarnon, Kiowa Gordon and Jessica Matten debuts Sunday on AMC and streaming service AMC+.

Alford said making the change was not easy but that the program was not performing to the level of its high standards. Mike Martin Sr. is the all-time leader in college baseball coaching victories.

Trump endorsed Michels over three other Republican candidates seeking to oust Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in the presidential battleground state. But Democrats filed a complaint with the elections commission arguing that Michels didn’t include his correct mailing address on his nomination papers.

A hole-by-hole look at The Country Club, which is hosting the 122nd U.S. Open. It's the fourth time at Brookline, and a playoff has decided the winner at each one. The course has been restored by Gil Hanse and it's a composite for championships of the three 9-hole courses. It features a 510-yard par 4 and a 131-yard par 3. There is plenty of history at Brookline. Part of the land was used for horse racing and steeplechase. There's even a pond that doesn't really come into play. It was used for skating and curling in the 19th century.
