NYSEG has completed the replacement of a substation in Willet.
The new structure supports approximately 7,000 customers in Cincinnatis, Marathon, McDonough, South Otzelick, Cape Whitney and Willett.
It can also be used as a backup power source for Green.
In order to improve reliability, NYSEG eliminated the original substation and built a brand new substation on the same plot.
The site is located on State Road 221 in Willet and is the midpoint between the Etna substation and the East Norwich substation.
Work on this project will begin in the spring of 2020. It is designed to provide space for two transformers, rather than a single transformer that used to run at full load.
"The new Willet substation provides greater system operational flexibility and improves the control and reliability of the Broome, Cortland, and Chenango counties power grids," said Kevin Rice, NYSEG substation operations manager. "Previously, the Willet substation could only accommodate one transformer. Since then, we have relocated it to the new substation and installed a second updated transformer, which we can remotely control, thereby shortening response time and reducing downtime."
