As storms moved through the city early this morning, the Jonesboro Fire Department responded to three separate power line/transformer fires as well as two separate structures struck by lightning, a post to social media said.

At 3:49AM, crews responded to a nursing home at the 5500-block of East Johnson. Callers said there was smoke in the building and residents were being evacuated. Crews investigated throughout the building and no further fire extension was found. The building was deemed safe and residents were able to return.

At 4:39AM, E5 (Engine 5), E2, E4, T2, T4, B2, and B1 responded to a lightning strike in the 6500-block of Merrill Drive. Upon arrival, Engine 5 reported smoke and fire coming from the roof of the residence. Crews advanced inside, making access to the attic area to extinguish the fire while E2 provided water supply from the nearest hydrant. Truck 2’s personnel utilized the aerial ladder for roof access to assist with ventilation while other crews deployed salvage tarps over personal belongings and furniture on the first floor below the fire area to minimize water damage.
