AEDC suffered a 65% power drop during substation installation

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) claimed that the Nigerian Transmission Company (TCN) forced it to cut 100 megawatts of electricity per day.

AEDC stated that this action has resulted in customers in parts of the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja (FCT) currently experiencing massive load shedding.

Recall that when TCN recently installed a 2 X 60MVA GIS 132/33kV substation in Gwarinpa, it guaranteed that “the large-capacity power supply to AEDC will not be affected during the 14-day installation period, because TCN has formulated sufficient plans to ensure that the supply is maintained AEDC’s power capacity. This means that the installation of TCN’s new GIS substation will not affect the bulk supply to Abuja’s DisCo customers.”

However, the current reality does not support TCN's statement. In contrast, AEDC reduced the electrical load that TCN delivers to the company by 65%. They have received 140MW so far, but now they have received 40MW.

Oyebode Fadipe AEDC Plc’s general manager of corporate communications said in a statement: “After starting to install 2x60MVA, our load in certain areas of Abuja has been significantly reduced by 65% of the load delivered to us every day. A 132/33kV gas insulated substation (GIS) constructed in Gwarinpa, Abuja, on October 27, 2021. The exercise is expected to continue until November 9, 2021.

"Due to this exercise by TCN, AED Plc can only extract 40MW from the 140MW it has received from TCN so far for distribution to customers who are fed from the Kubwa 2 X 60MVA 132/33kV transmission station (AT4). Kubwa TS is Abu Jia’s Dawaki, Bwari, Deidei and Kubwa 33kV injection substations provide services. 40MW is shared by Suleja and Kubwa transmission stations on a 20MW basis.

"In order not to completely cut off the feeder, the load carried by the Kubwa 2 X 60MVA 132/33kV substation has been transferred to the Suleja transmission station, which has led to the massive load shedding of the aforementioned feeder currently experienced by AED Plc customers.

"Affected areas include Dawaki, Deidei, Kubwa, Gbazango, Suleja, Gwagwa, Iddu Karmo, Life Camp and parts of Gwarinpa, I-Pent Estate, EFAB Metropolis and Mab-Global Estate. Others include Zuba and Kadu Nalu, Bovari, Duce, Usman Dam, Dantata, Kubwa, Zuma, Goraka, Dico, Dedai International Building Materials Market and surrounding areas.

"Therefore, we call on our customers to be patient, because this event aims to meet more needs and provide room for improved services," Fadipe said.
